Oklahoma Teacher of the Year finalists announced

As one educator steps into her role as Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, 12 others have been named as finalists for the 2020 award.

2019 state Teacher of the Year Becky Oglesby announced the finalists Tuesday before a packed auditorium at Southmoore High School. Educators from across the state attended workshops and heard an address from state schools Superintendent Joy Hofmeister at EngageOK on the Road during the multi-day conference's final stop in Moore.

The 2020 Teacher of the Year will be named on Sept. 17 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City.

Jenks Administrator Named State Superintendent Of The Year

JENKS, Oklahoma - The Oklahoma Association of School Administrators named Dr. Stacey Butterfield as the 2019 Superintendent of the Year at the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration Summer Leadership Conference on Wednesday.

"I am extremely humbled to receive this award, and I am incredibly grateful to CCOSA and OASA for all they do to support school administrators,” said Dr. Butterfield, who has been Superintendent at Jenks Public Schools since 2013.

“It is an honor to represent my colleagues from around the state who work tirelessly to advocate for public education here in Oklahoma.

SB0441 requires public schools to be in session, beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, for not less than 1,080 hours with a minimum of 165 days of instruction if a district board of education adopts a school-hours policy and notifies the State Board of Education prior to October 15 of the applicable school year or for not less than 1,080 hours if a district board of education adopts a school-hours policy, notifies the State Board of Education prior to October 15 of the applicable school year and meets the requirements established by the State Board of Education. It permits a school district board of education, beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, to adopt a 1,080 school-hours policy only if it meets or exceeds the minimum guidelines for student performance and school district cost savings established by the State Board of Education. The bill requires the State Board of Education to promulgate rules, subject to approval by the Legislature, establishing the minimum guidelines for student performance and school district cost savings. It provides it does not prohibit the Oklahoma School for the Blind or the Oklahoma School for the Deaf from adopting an alternative school-hours policy if the Oklahoma School for the Blind or the Oklahoma School for the Deaf notifies and receives approval from the State Board of Education prior to October 15 of the applicable school year.

Oklahoma New state budget backs concurrent enrollment program

More than $13 million of the total budget is being designated to fund concurrent enrollment to help state colleges pay for high school seniors to take college classes, an increase of nearly $3.3 million ahead of last year.
